__________________Mulder was making a documentary.
"It's 8:34 pm of February 24th," he said, standing in the kitchen
with the little camcorder. He recalled, without nostalgia, the video
cameras of yore that you had to ride around on your shoulder like a
Roman wine jug. "Special Agent In Charge Dana Scully, tireless in
her quest to run to ground the mystery of the Klines' disappearance,
appears to be cutting up a cantaloupe."Scully pitched him a warning look, turning her shoulder to him. "She slays
the unsuspecting melon with rapid downward slashes," Mulder narrated
tonelessly. "Her weapon of choice appears to be a large and deadly bread
knife..."Scully turned, hissing "Mulder - damnit!" with a look of undisguised venom.
"She gently admonishes her partner with a fondness born of years
of endearing proximity," said Mulder. He began to back away. "Agent
Scully advances upon her unarmed partner wielding the bread knife
with obvious malice aforethought..."Scully reached out, her palm filling the tiny screen, and clicked
off the camera. She relieved him of it and set it aside, and reached
around his waist, lightly frisking him. Mulder made an 'Oooh!' face,
but kept quiet."You are too packin'," said Scully. "Why did you say you weren't?"
She returned her attentions to the cantaloupe.Mulder decided against a joke about what he was packing, and
turned to a newspaper lying on the counter. "Plot device," he said,
suddenly bored. "I'm going to take a shower. Can I use your hair
stuff?""Which hair stuff? Conditioner?"
"Naw. The stuff that makes my hair stick up and feel crispy. That
you had in Kroner.""Sure. It's in the bathroom." She turned around, licking juice
from under her lip. "You picked a good cantaloupe.""Good." He grabbed a cube as he loped out of the room.
When Scully heard him clanging around in the bathroom upstairs she
rewound the movie he'd made of her and watched it, sardonically amused. This was how he saw her.
She didn't erase it.
